Most of these boats were used as tenders and training ships in the 1930s. However, because of the short number of modern minesweepers at the outbreak of the war, the old minesweepers were again fitted to operate in their original role. In October 1940, the first digit of their former pennant was replaced with a "5" in order to differenciate them from the modern 1935 boats. Thus, M108 became M508, M109 became M509, and so on.
